NIH Budget Status
The President's
$2.4 trillion budget for FY'05 calls for a 2.6% increase for NIH. The
Biomedical Research & Development Price Index (BRDPI), which measures the
rising cost of NIH sponsored research, is predicted to increase by 3.8% in
FY'04. Thus, the possibility of zero growth at NIH remains strong. Competing
budget priorities, the growth of the federal deficit, and a sense in
Congress that science spending needs to be spread more evenly among other
disciplines and other agencies conspire for a difficult funding period in
the years ahead. News from EB 2003 Meeting:
2003 Budget:
The Cardiovascular Division budget for 2003 is $21,667. Revenues include
membership dues ($8,705), FASEB base ($5,000), and carryover ($7,962).
Expenses for 2003 will include symposia sponsorships, the EB 2003 Mixer,
graduate student and postdoc awards, and communication expenses.
News from EB 2002 Meeting:
