NIH Budget Status

The President's $2.4 trillion budget for FY'05 calls for a 2.6% increase for NIH. The Biomedical Research & Development Price Index (BRDPI), which measures the rising cost of NIH sponsored research, is predicted to increase by 3.8% in FY'04. Thus, the possibility of zero growth at NIH remains strong. Competing budget priorities, the growth of the federal deficit, and a sense in Congress that science spending needs to be spread more evenly among other disciplines and other agencies conspire for a difficult funding period in the years ahead.
